Worldcoin (WLD), a cryptocurrency project founded by OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman, has been launched on Tuesday with the aim of redefining the digital identification process by offering users a World ID, which verifies that the ID owner is a real human.

The project is trending on Twitter social media space. The cryptocurrency described as being “dystopian” and launched by AI entrepreneur, gives people digital coins in exchange for a scan of their eyeballs.

In sites around the world, thousands of people queued to gaze into silver orbs on day one of the project’s full launch.

Worldcoin is a decentralized open source protocol supported by a global community of developers, economists and technologists committed to expanding participation in, and access to, the global digital economy.

It was founded more than three years ago with the ambition of creating a new identity and financial network owned by everyone.

According to the founder, Worldcoin could drastically increase economic opportunity, scale a reliable solution for distinguishing humans from AI online while preserving privacy, enable global democratic processes, and eventually show a potential path to AI-funded UBI.

Worldcoin consists of a privacy-preserving digital identity (World ID) and, where laws allow, a digital currency (WLD) received simply for being human.
