Former President Muhammadu Buhari has voiced his deep concerns regarding the unfolding events in Niger Republic, Nigeria’s neighbouring country to the North.
In a statement by his spokesman, Garba Shehu, on Friday, Buhari joined millions of Nigerians in expressing shock over recent developments and raised questions about the fate of democracy in the region, especially in light of the safety of President Mohammed Bazoum and his family.
He said, “I and my family are as much concerned about these as is everyone else.”
The former Nigerian leader highlighted the critical importance of preserving democracy in Niger and the wider subregion.
He emphasised the need for swift and effective action to address the situation and ensure the safety and well-being of President Bazoum and his family.
Expressing hope and solidarity, President Buhari commended the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for its proactive approach in dealing with the matter.
He specifically praised the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is at the helm of ECOWAS, for taking effective steps to address the crisis.
“It is heartening to note that the ECOWAS, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is already dealing effectively with the matter,” President Buhari said, expressing his confidence in the regional organisation’s ability to address the situation.
