The 10th House of Representatives would enact legislations to address the root causes of security challenges in Nigeria, Speaker Abbas Tajudeen has said.

He said the House would also strengthen the capacity of Nigeria‘s Armed Forces to be able to respond to such challenges.

Abbas stated this while declaring open a two-day post inauguration retreat for members of the House Committee on Defence organised jointly by the Committee and the National Defence College.

The Speaker Abbas noted that security is one of the priority areas highlighted in the Legislative Agenda of the 10th House of Representatives.

He stated that the security of the nation is a collective responsibility, and that the legislative arm of government has a critical role to play in ensuring that the Armed Forces and the police are well-equipped and adequately funded to tackle the multiple security challenges facing the country.

Meanwhile, the Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Defence, Hon. Babajimi Benson has said that the revival of the Defence Industries Association of Nigeria (DIAN) will help in transforming the security architecture of the country.

Benson who lamented the pitiable condition of DIAN, said reviving the association is a task that must be done to address the rising wave of insecurity in Nigeria.

The member representing Ikorodu Federal Constituency of Lagos State at a press conference in Abuja, said DICN which was established in 1964 to provide the material needs of the nation‘s Armed forces and other security agencies has been unable to deliver on its mandate.

Benson said it was in attempt to correct this anomaly that he sponsored the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria Bill in 2019 for DICN to transit  into a Military Industrial Complex (MIC) by making it largely self-funding and giving it the powers.
