US President Donald Trump has made sexually explicit remarks about rapper Nicki Minaj during a Republican campaign rally in Michigan, praising her figure before inviting her to stand and address the crowd.
Trump made the remarks on Sunday while campaigning for Republican candidates ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.
During his speech, Trump turned the crowd’s attention to Minaj, who was present at the rally, and said: “By the way, I looked at one hell of a beautiful ass before, Nicki Minaj, that’s hard to miss. Stand up. That’s hard to miss.
“Okay, I’m gonna get back to my story. I hope Nicki wasn’t insulted, but we love Nicki. She’s been with us for a long time.”
Minaj, who has previously described herself as Trump’s “number one fan”, later praised the president and expressed her continued support for him.
Speaking at the rally, the rapper said Trump had changed the country’s political atmosphere and given Americans hope for the future.
“Since he’s come back, He’s changed the energy of our country; he’s given us a future to look forward to, a brighter future for our children and for us. So let’s make some noise for this great man; I love him so much. So, President Trump, it is an honour to stand with you every single time, and I will continue to support you forever and ever. If you run again, I’ll support you again,” she said.
Responding to her remarks, Trump said: “And she never looked more beautiful, thank you Nicki, that’s great.”
He later added, “She never looked more beautiful,” describing the rapper as smart.
Minaj, who was born in Trinidad and Tobago, appeared at the rally wearing a gold-coloured Gucci-branded suit. She also led the crowd in chanting Trump’s name and those of Republican candidates in Michigan.
“We really need all these great people to be elected, because this is a major turning point for our country,” she said.
The rapper’s appearance at the rally is the latest in a series of public expressions of support for Trump, despite her previous criticism of some of his policies during his first term in office.
Minaj has also supported Trump’s position on alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria and his proposed “gold card” visa programme, which offers applicants residency and a pathway to US citizenship.
The rally comes as Republicans and Democrats intensify their campaigns ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, which will determine which party controls Congress for the remainder of Trump’s presidency.
In Michigan, Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed is locked in a competitive race against Republican Mike Rogers.
Former US President Barack Obama campaigned alongside El-Sayed on Saturday as Democrats stepped up efforts to secure votes ahead of the election.
During his Sunday remarks, Trump also criticised El-Sayed over his Muslim faith and background, alleging that the Democratic candidate would “invite jihadists” into the United States if elected.
El-Sayed has condemned similar comments by Trump as Islamophobic, accusing the president of using his name and religion to distract voters from economic difficulties.
In an advert to voters last week, El-Sayed said Trump “thinks he can use my name and my faith to distract us from the suffering his policies are inflicting on us at the pump, at the grocery store, and at the doctor’s office”.

Minaj had travelled to Michigan with Trump aboard Air Force One. She also appeared in a video filmed on the presidential aircraft with an aide, jokingly pretending to interview for the White House press secretary position.
