Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has urged Nigerians to support the government at all levels to develop the country’s basic education.

The commission’s executive secretary, Dr Hamid Bobboyi, made the call at a meeting on promoting partnership with the organised private sector and other key stakeholders in the implementation of the Universal Basic Education (UBE) programme.

At the event held yesterday in Abuja, Bobboyi said education for all is the responsibility of everybody, noting that any country that neglects its foundational level will face consequences.

He stressed the need for stakeholders to appreciate the importance of focusing on basic education to create a better future for the children.

According to him, the federal government has been spending a lot of resources in the sector, while some issues still persisted.

“The meeting is to find ways in which the private sector could also understand what we are doing and the challenges within the basic education sector.

“The federal government of course is spending. Every year the federal government is putting in that much into the system.

“The federal government alone cannot run the system. Nigeria has over 45 million children in the public basic educational sub sector and with this number, it requires all hands to be on desk.”

He said unless teachers are paid well, it will be very difficult to achieve the standard desired, adding that the number of teachers since COVID-19 has reduced.

He added, “The future lies in the smart schools. KOICA has come to support UBEC in this particular journey but we need the support of the private sector. We need to build a future that is based on technology to prepare them for the future.”
