Ahead of the 2024 summer Olympic in Paris, the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has charged the national sports federation presidents,Federal Ministry of Sports Development and athletes to ensure that Nigeria surpasses its previous achievements at the global sporting fiesta.

NOC President Habu Gumel gave the charge during the body’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on Wednesday via virtually.

Gumel, in a communiqué released on Thursday by NOC spokesperson, Tony Nezianya, said Nigeria needs to participate strongly in three major events games in 2024.

“We need a new result at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games by improving on the 1996 Atlanta Games, where Nigeria won two Gold medals,” he said.

According to the NOC President, Nigeria won two good medals in the Atlanta Games in 1996 through Chioma Ajunwa in long jump and the Nwankwo Kanu-led Dream Team in soccer.

He, therefore, called for better performance in the Paris Olympics, even as the country also prepared to participate in 2024 Youth Winter Games and the African Games.

Nezianya also quoted Gumel as highlighting the committee’s achievements and plans for the future.

He described the year 2023 as a successful year for sports development in the country.
Gumel reflected on the activities of 2022, emphasising the Committee’s commitment to uniting the Olympic family and promoting the ideals of the Olympic Movement.

He outlined the successful acquisition of five hectares of land for the building of the Committee’s Secretariat in Abuja.

He also mentioned the completion of the Olympafrica section of the Amuwo Odofin project in Lagos.
The highlight of the report presented by Gumel was on the impressive performance of Team Nigeria at the Commonwealth Games, where the country won a total of 12 Gold, nine Silver, and 14 Bronze medals.
