The Liberian government has reversed its vote against a United Nations resolution calling for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

President George Weah intervened after Liberia became the only African nation, and one of only ten countries in the world, to oppose the resolution on December 12th.

The Liberia Information Ministry confirmed that the change of heart came due to Weah’s disapproval of the original vote.

Foreign Ministry officials acted without his full consent, and Weah, who has consistently advocated for peace, requested a reversal of the ‘NO’ vote in favour of the ceasefire.

This move aligns with Weah’s past efforts to mediate conflict. Prior to the UN vote, he wrote to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urging restraint and consideration for civilians caught in the ongoing crisis.

This reversal marks a significant shift in Liberia’s stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and reflects President Weah’s personal commitment to promoting peace and diplomacy. While his re-election bid was unsuccessful in November, this decision on the ceasefire demonstrates his continued influence and dedication to global peace efforts.
