Wife of Abia State governor, Pricilla Otti has called on governments, civil society, private sector and other critical stakeholders to pull down all barriers militating against women and girls denying them the opportunities for self-realisation.

Mrs Otti stated this at the 2024 International Women’s Day celebration in Umuahia, the state capital, adding that investments in the education of women and the girl-child translates into improved literacy rate and enhanced skills.

She maintained that investment in women leads to accelerated progress which is crucial to the development of the female gender.

The state first lady said, “Investing in women is a catalyst for societal advancement, fostering economic growth, innovation, and social development,” adding that the Alex Otti administration is running with the idea.

“By channelling resources into education, entrepreneurship and leadership opportunities for women, we empower them to contribute fully to the workforce and community.”

While noting that researchers have consistently highlighted that there are positive correlations between gender diversity and financial performance in companies, she added that ultimately women make better leaders.

“In Abia State, we recognise that achieving gender equality requires a concerted effort from all segments of society – government, civil society, private sector and individuals alike.

“It demands that we take bold actions and systematically pull down all barriers militating against women and girls denying them the opportunities for self-realisation.”

She stressed that despite the progress recorded so far, women should not rest on their oars. “We must remain vigilant in our efforts to address the systemic challenges that continue to impede the advancement of women,” she added.

Mrs Otti highlighted such efforts to include tackling gender-based violence, promoting women’s economic empowerment and ensuring access to comprehensive healthcare services for women and girls.

The commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Ngozi Felix said in every sector now, be it science, arts, politics and business, women have exhibited brilliance and resilience.

“Our celebration today is not without acknowledging gender disparity, discrimination, trafficking in girls and violence against women,” she said, and called for collective action by the society to address the issues.

The occasion featured keynote speakers, Jemima Ogwo and Franca Elechi, as well as a goodwill message by Chioma Ibezim, and lectures by Chizoba Achor and Princess Nwaguru, among others.
