Kano Empowers Women, Appoints 5 Female Judges

Kano State government says 1,028 women from across the 486 wards of the state would benefit from an empowerment programme and grants package to improve their lives and businesses.

The commissioner for women Affairs, Children and the Disabled, Hajiya Aisha Saji stated this while briefing newsmen on some of the activities lined up to mark the 2024 International Women’s Day which has the theme, “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress.”

She said the beneficiaries would include women living with HIV/AIDs, survivors of sexual/ gender-based violence (SGBV) and women cooperative groups, noting that the women would be trained on agricultural production while others would be given grants of N20,000 each to enhance their businesses.

In another development, spokesman of the state governor, Sanusi Dawakin Tofa has said that Governor Abba Yusuf has inaugurated five additional female judges into the State High Court, fulfilling part of his promises of social inclusion and women empowerment.

In a statement, Tofa said, out of the nine judges sworn-in, five are females. They include Justice Fatima Adamu, Justice Hauwa Lawan, Justice Farida Rabi’u Danbappa, Justice Halima Aliyu Nasir, and Justice Aisha Mahmoud.

“In a separate ceremony, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf also inaugurated RN Bilkisu Indabo as the first female chair of the Interim Management Committee of Wudil LGA.

“Among the 44 Local Government Interim Management Committee chairmen inaugurated, Bilkisu was the sole female appointee,” he noted.
