The Registrar of the Chartered Institute of Human Resources and Strategic Management (CIHRSM), Abell Minna Onomroba, has urged the government to engage professionals to implement its policies.
The CIHRSM boss, who stated this at the induction of HR practitioners at an event held in Lagos tagged “Sustainable Development and Public Policy In Nigeria Leveraging Human Resources and Strategic Management,” added that when formulators and implementers of government policies are not well-grounded, such policies will stunt the country’s development and economic growth.
He affirmed that engaging professionals in those fields will propel the nation’s economic growth and development, as no government will want to formulate policies that affect itself.
Onomroba emphasized that Nigeria needs to recognize the importance of finding a balance between economic growth, social progress, and environmental stewardship. This requires implementing well-crafted public policies that will address the multifaceted challenges we face as a nation.
He stated, “In sustainable development, public policy must be designed to foster economic prosperity, reduce poverty, promote social inclusion, and protect our natural resources.
“Leveraging our human resources is crucial in achieving sustainable development goals. Our people are our most valuable asset, possessing the knowledge, expertise, and skills to drive change. Investing in education, training, and capacity building can empower individuals to contribute meaningfully to the development agenda.”
He added, “We cannot talk about poverty without looking at the education sector. Our curriculum is more theoretically oriented, just as we need practical orientation. The curriculum should be orchestrated to fit our system and not the Western world, as we need a practical curriculum that befits our nation.”
Harping on the vexed issue of hunger amidst other challenges, Onomroba said, “Farming should be fully embraced and introduced in our tertiary institutions and not offered as a specialized course but a course that relates to agriculture and farming”
He urged the government to empower grassroots farmers as a way to alleviate poverty and food security, saying insecurity and banditry need to be tackled head-on to attain food security.
In his address at the event, Lagos State Education District One, Head of Administration and Human Resources, Mr M.S. Aremu remarked that Nigeria being a member nation of the UN as a matter of urgency should implement public policy that will play a pivotal role in achieving sustainable development goals in accord with the UN charter by leveraging on human resources and strategic management through its policies.
