A professor of Physics (Renewable Energy) at the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai in Niger State, Professor Baba Alfa, has given reasons why advancement of science and technology has eluded Nigeria.

Professor Baba Alfa who spoke at the 23rd Inaugural Lecture Series with the theme, “Physics: Our Science, Our Technology, Our Prosperity” at the main campus of the university yesterday said science and technology lag behind in the country due to absence of meaningful commitment to science, either basic or applied.

He attributed it to  inadequate institutional and legal framework, as well as the manner in which the enterprise of science has been implemented and therefore  called for  change of  the narrative to enhance results.

The professor said for any country to develop, the number of physicists for instance must reach a critical mass for it to unleash its potential in science and technological development.

Alfa described physics as a tool for development of society and country while identifying four areas of science and technology to include; basic science which is curiosity oriented, science in application, conventional low technology and high technology.

In his address at the lecture, the vice chancellor, Professor Abu Kasim Adamu, said the topic “Physics: Our Science, Our Technology, Our Prosperity” by Professor Baba Alfa was apt.

Professor Adamu emphasised the  role of alternative power potential  for the  growth, development and industrialisation of Nigeria,  while calling for exploitation of the vast natural renewable energy sources like solar, wind, hydro and biomass.
