The government added that the teachers who had gone through a rigorous recruitment process would fill identified gaps in primary and junior secondary schools across the state.

The executive chairman, State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Mrs Ozavize Salami, disclosed this in Benin on Friday at a press conference on the recruitment process.

Salami said 19,931 applications were received for vacant teaching positions in the teaching services out of which 16,038 were selected for computer-based tests (CBT).

According to her, “Out of the 5,500 new recruits, 2,500 will be permanent government teachers, 3,000 will refill the approved EdoSTAR positions and commence a new phase of a 3-year fellowship programme.”

Speaking on what EdoSTAR stands for, Salami disclosed that it was a programme launched in 2020 by Governor Godwin Obaseki as a strategic response to the gaps in the teaching workforce across the state.

“This recruitment exercise is part of our strategy to close the teacher gap in primary and junior secondary schools.

“Most of the new teachers are young and vibrant; they will reinvigorate the existing corps of teachers in the school system,” she added.
