Many Killed, 2,000 Houses Affected In Zamfara Flood Disaster

Many people were reported killed while no fewer than 2,000 houses were submerged by flood in Gummi town, headquarters of Gummi local government area of Zamfara State yesterday, but the state commissioner for humanitarian affairs and disaster management, Hon. Musa Yusuf Tsafe, said there was no report of death.

A resident who gave his name as Alhaji Abu Cash down, told our correspondent on telephone that

property worth of millions of naira was lost, while a large number of livestock including cows, sheep, donkeys and goats were flushed away by the torrential rains.

Abu said most of the people that died were women and children who could not escape from the strong water flow.

According to him, the heavy rains started Friday around 9:00am and continued till 4:00am on Saturday.

He said the submerged houses were at valley in the area, and many residents who escaped from their houses ran to school buildings in Gummi.

“I am also a victim of the flood as my house was submerged and all my property was washed away leaving me and the family to manage in one of my brother’s houses,” he said.

However, the commissioner who said a state government delegate including himself was in Gummi town and went round to ascertain the extent of damage, said nobody died.
