The Northern Youth Initiatives for Peace and Good Governance has thrown its weight behind Sokoto State governor, Ahmed Aliyu for drilling new boreholes worth N1.2bn across the state.

Chairman of the group, Comrade Zakari Hashim in a recent press release stated that the project is a necessity, given the long-standing challenges of water access in Sokoto adding that the state has struggled for years with the lack of potable water. He said Aliyu administration’s commitment to solving this issue deserves applause.

Clarifying the criticism surrounding the project, Hashim noted that the procurement process is part of a global initiative by the World Bank, and that many other states have keyed into similar partnerships adding that the state partnered with the World Bank to secure counterpart funding, hence the government has taken decisive steps to address water scarcity and reduce the prevalence of waterborne diseases, such as cholera. He urged the governor not to be distracted by those who aim to mislead or criticise without merit.

Meanwhile, the group lauded the ‘giant developmental stride’ of Governor Aliyu stating that his administration has set the state on the right path, particularly in addressing the core issues of poverty alleviation, economic empowerment, and sustainable livelihood for the citizens.

“One of the key highlights of this administration is the recent infrastructural growth, which is strategically positioned to foster economic development in the rural areas of the state. His Excellency has made agriculture a top priority, with concerted efforts to alleviate hunger and enhance food security.

“Our team has embarked on a feasibility tour across all Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Sokoto State, and we have witnessed firsthand the positive impact of the governor’s performance.

Numerous laudable projects are underway, with clear benefits for the communities, spurring economic growth and boosting livelihoods.

“Furthermore, the administration’s efforts align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in poverty eradication and quality education. Sokoto’s educational landscape is being transformed as the Governor tackles the issue of out-of-school children with practical and effective solutions,” the group said.

Continuing, the group said in less than two years, Governor Aliyu has changed the narrative in Sokoto State adding that the state is now on a path of economic recovery, increased agricultural productivity, and the development of affordable housing schemes in new layouts. It noted that as they continue to monitor the government’s progress, they fully support the governor’s policies and initiatives aimed at poverty alleviation, economic empowerment, and sustainable development.
