In a heartfelt tribute on Friday, Tinubu said Iwuanyanwu, who passed away on July 25, 2024, was renowned for his contributions to sports, business, politics, and philanthropy, leaving an indelible mark on the nation’s development.

In his message, President Tinubu highlighted Chief Iwuanyanwu’s pioneering role in Nigerian sports, particularly as the founder of Iwuanyanwu Nationale Football Club (now Heartland F.C.), which achieved significant success under his leadership.

Tinubu praised the late statesman’s dedication to excellence, which saw his club win several national and international championships.

Beyond sports, Chief Iwuanyanwu served Nigeria in numerous official capacities, including as the founding chairman of the Raw Materials and Research Development Council (RMRDC) and the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC).

He also chaired the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) board, the Nigerian National Lottery, and the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos.

Describing him as “courageous, defiant of injustice, and uncompromising,” Tinubu lauded Iwuanyanwu’s contributions to business and philanthropy.

He noted that the elder statesman believed deeply in Nigeria’s potential, with investments spanning multiple sectors.

Tinubu also acknowledged his philanthropic efforts, which included scholarships for indigent students, the construction of schools and hospitals, and support for numerous charitable causes.

The President expressed his condolences to the Iwuanyanwu family, the government and people of Imo State, and the wider Igbo community as preparations begin for the late statesman’s burial.

Tinubu remarked that Iwuanyanwu’s legacy of service and leadership would be fondly remembered, and prayed for his soul to rest in peace.

Iwuanyanwu, who was 81 years old, is remembered as a towering figure whose influence extended across various sectors of Nigerian life. His death, President Tinubu said, is a “massive loss to the nation.”
