Institute of Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) and its partners have taken steps to establish a National Conflict Early Warning Early Response Situation Room (EWSR) to stop the crises from escalating in Nigeria.
The director general of IPCR, Dr Joseph Ochogwu made this known while briefing reporters on the National Engagement and launch of Early Warning Early Response (EWER) initiative organised by Peace Action for Rapid and Transformative Nigeria Early Response (PARTNER) on Friday in Abuja.
Ochogwu noted that the Situation Room to be launched in the Institute on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, will be the hub for collecting and analysing data related to potential conflict flashpoints throughout the country.
He said: “By utiliing advanced technology and data analytics, we aim to identify emerging threats and provide timely responses to prevent escalation.
“The Early Warning and Early Response Situation Room will not only help in identifying potential conflicts before they escalate but also facilitate quick and coordinated responses among relevant stakeholders.”
The IPCR boss also said that the Situation Room staffers have been equipped with the capacity to manage the EWSR effectively.
The chief of Party of Mercy Corps, Mr Danjuma Dawop, during the briefing noted that the establishment of this situation room is important for Nigeria, following the myriad of crises the country is confronting at the moment.
He noted that the crises in Nigeria have often been related to ethnic and communal tensions, insurgency, and violence.
“So far we’ve seen that effective early warning and early response has prevented conflict escalation and mitigated violence extremism across Nigeria, “he said.
He added that the Situation Room aligns with global best practices in peacebuilding and conflict resolution, even as he expressed hope that this proactive approach will significantly contribute to sustainable peace in Nigeria.
PARTNER is a United States Agency for International Development (USAID) sponsored conflict early warning early response system enhancement project in Nigeria.
The project is being implemented in nine states within the North Central and North West geo-political zones by a consortium of peace and conflict related organisations under the Mercy Corps Nigeria (MCN).
