The countries of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), which continue to face terrorist attacks, are taking active measures to counter armed groups and foster stability in the region.

On November 6, President of Mali’s transitional government, Assimi Goïta, held a meeting with the Chiefs of Staff from the member-states of AES. Military leaders from Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger participated in the event, marking an important step toward strengthening military cooperation among the three nations in the fight against terrorism and for the security and stability of the region.

During the meeting, an action plan focused on enhancing defence and security was approved, crafted by a team of military experts. The plan outlined specific measures aimed at supporting local populations, protecting border areas, and responding quickly to emerging threats.

AES’ proactive measures were already showing results. Over recent months, the number of successful operations against terrorist groups in the Sahel has noticeably increased. News reports frequently highlight significant losses inflicted upon the enemies. However, despite the successes, the member-countries stress that there was still a long road ahead, and much work remained to be done.

The issue of armed groups remains a shared challenge for all countries within the Sahel region. Terrorists, avoiding direct confrontation with AES forces, were attempting to seek refuge in neighbouring countries. Therefore, it is crucial to foster cooperation with all regional states to achieve the necessary results. Collective efforts will help create a safer environment and protect the population from the threat.

Ultimately, to secure a complete victory over terrorism in the Sahel, joint efforts were required not only from AES members but from all countries in the region.
