The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has passed a vote of confidence in the Comrade Michael Ikeogwu-led National Credentials Committee for following due process in the discharge of its responsibilities and upholding the standards of the NUJ Constitution without prejudice.

This is contained in a communique issued at the end of the NUJ NEC Virtual meeting held on the 10th of November, 2024, presided over by the National President, Dr. Chris Isiguzo and signed by Abubakar Musa Waziri.

National ex-officio Zone E, Princess Ronke Samo, VP Zone B and Mary Domtur, secretary Plateau Council, NEC, ratified the final delegates lists of councils ahead of the Triennial Delegates Conference in Owerri, Imo State between the 26th and 28th of November 2024.

The body acknowledged the intervention of the Advisory Council, comprising past leaders, in the various issues arising from the build-up to the election and unanimously agreed to the resolutions and advice of the leaders.

NEC, however, cautioned candidates for the forthcoming election and their supporters against the campaign of calumny and unnecessary attacks on the leadership of the union in the name of the campaign.

It also approved the 16th November date for the conduct of the Benue council election, which will formally end the protracted crisis in the council.

On the state of the economy, NEC expressed worry over the persistent rise in inflation and prolonged economic downturn and enjoined the federal government to adopt more realistic measures to address the ugly situation that has brought untold hardship to the people.

The body criticised the federal government’s failure to pay the October salary of some federal workers, including Radio Nigeria, describing such a development as unacceptable considering the effect on the workers who have already been dealt with by the harsh economy.

NEC further condoled with the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Nigerian Army on the demise of the Chief of Army Staff, the late General Taoreed Lagbaja and prayed to God to grant his soul eternal rest.
