A UK-funded educational programme, Partnership for Learning for All in Nigeria (PLANE) in collaboration with the Kaduna State Universal Basic Education Board (KADSUBEB), has trained 1,758 primary 4 teachers on inclusive instruction and Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) to utilise knowledge in classroom delivery.

The State’s Team Lead, Diana Agabi, disclosed this yesterday during a data dissemination workshop in Kaduna.

According to Agabi, to improve quality of education, government must take proactive measures to ensure that teachers and learners are in school with the help of communities.

She said, PLANE observed that the low turnout of teachers, particularly in rural communities, has greatly affected children’s education, particularly in the northern part of the country.

“Most of the teachers in the north are those posted from the Southern parts, and with the economic situation which affects the cost of transportation for their movement from one local government area.

“That’s why you’ll see that a pupil that’s in P1 or P2 cannot meet up with the benchmark or ability to identify letters or words at the end of the day”.

She however, noted that PLANE supported SUBEB in the distribution, monitoring, and tracking of Teaching and Learning Materials (TLMs), and inclusion materials to 698 schools.

“Developed three sets of evidence-based English Literacy Teaching and Learning (T&L) packages and two Braille Learners’ Books designed to support inclusive education and accessibility.

“To ensure disability inclusion, PLANE collaborated with SUBEB and the MoE to conduct a conceptualization workshop on the development of braille materials for visually impaired learners.”

According to her, PLANE has provided a 2-day data management training to six EMIS and M&E Officers in Kaduna State to improve real-time data generation and management and to conduct step-down/hands-on training for EMIS/M&E officers across 23 LGAs for sustainability.

Earlier, the Commissioner, Ministry of Education, Kaduna State, Prof. Muhammad Sani Bello who was represented by the director of planning, Abbas Shehu explained that the ministry is committed to improving quality of education in the state.

“The Ministry of Education, Kaduna State, is committed to improving the quality of education in our state. We believe that data-driven decision-making is critical to achieving this goal. Therefore, we are excited to be part of the PLANE project, which aims to improve learning outcomes in Nigeria.

“The data dissemination workshop is a crucial step in this process. It provides an opportunity for us to review the progress made so far, identify areas of strength and weakness, and chart a course for future improvement”.

The permanent member, Kaduna State Universal Basic Education Board, Dr. Jamil Haruna urged community members to safeguard their schools.
