Armed Force, Police & Parliamentary International Band Festival (AFOPPIBAF), has unveiled plans for the National Drumline and Marching Band Festival, an initiative aimed at uniting Nigeria’s military and paramilitary bands while promoting cultural diversity and regimental music.

Organized under the leadership of the Director-General, Amb. Justin Duru, the festival will bring together bands from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Police, Civil Defense, and other paramilitary organizations. Themed “Togetherness: Unity in Diversity”, the event draws inspiration from Sonny Okosun’s legendary song and seeks to promote harmony, collaboration, and Nigeria’s global standing in military music.

The key festival features: Street Parades: Ceremonial and creative displays by participating bands, Drumline Competitions: Modeled after the movie Drumline, emphasizing creativity and technical skill.

Cultural Displays: Showcasing vibrant performances celebrating Nigeria’s rich heritage and Unity Band Serenade: A performance by a joint ensemble of military and paramilitary bands.

The festival will also include a symposium, colloquium, and serenades to foster collaboration and preserve the traditions of military music.

Initially planned for 2020, the festival was postponed due to the pandemic but has since achieved remarkable milestones. One of its most significant accomplishments is the creation of the Unity Band Ensemble Orchestra, which debuted in 2022 to widespread acclaim.

The initiative has also revived moribund bands, such as those of the Customs, Correctional Services, and Fire Service, which had ceased to function but are now active participants in the project.

The festival highlights career opportunities in military performing arts, aiming to inspire Nigerian youth to explore creative roles within uniformed services. This initiative also seeks to demystify perceptions of military and paramilitary agencies, fostering stronger civil-military relationships.

Scheduled to launch next year, the festival will feature participants from African and international bands, celebrating Nigeria’s cultural richness and regimental music traditions.

According to Amb Duru, this event will not only strengthen national unity but also position Nigeria as a global hub for military and paramilitary music excellence.

With its inclusive and innovative approach, the National Drumline and Marching Band Festival promises to be a landmark event in Nigeria’s cultural and musical history.
