Amid stampede deaths in the country, the Lagos State government, through the Lagos State Safety Commission, has recently decried the trend of overcrowding in several clubs and lounges across the city.
The state government, in a statement by the Director General, Chief Executive Officer, Lagos State Safety Commission, Mr Lanre Mojola, stated that while the commission wholeheartedly supports vibrant nightlife and the economic benefits it brings, it must adhere strictly to authorised occupancy limits as approved by the commission.
According to him, no nightclub should allow overcrowding, which poses significant safety risks, including the potential for fire hazards, smoking in public spaces, compromised emergency exits, and increased likelihood of accidents. These risks endanger not only the lives of patrons but also the staff and the general public.
Mojola urges all hospitality venue owners and operators to strictly comply with the safety measures and occupancy limits set forth by the Lagos State Safety Commission.
“These regulations are in place to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone,’’ he said.
He disclosed that the commission has commenced rigorous inspections to ensure compliance, adding that any establishment found to violate these safety regulations will face immediate closure and further legal actions as deemed necessary.
He declared that the commission appreciated the cooperation of all stakeholders in maintaining a safe and enjoyable environment for all.
