Former President Muhammadu Buhari has described former Ekiti State governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, as a towering figure of statesmanship and leadership whose contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape would remain a benchmark for generations.

Buhari stated this in a message to commemorate Fayemi’s 60th birthday.

In his tribute, Buhari praised Fayemi’s steadfast dedication to democratic ideals, noting that his critical role in shaping Nigeria’s political history.

“On the occasion of his birth anniversary, I pay homage to our beloved friend and colleague, John Kayode

Fayemi, who stands tall as a statesman and a leader, inspiring others in all age brackets across Nigeria,” Buhari said.

The former president highlighted Fayemi’s significant contribution to the formation and success of the All Progressives Congress (APC), recalling how the former Ekiti State governor was instrumental in the merger of opposition parties that culminated in the historic defeat of the ruling party in 2015.

“Fayemi played an instrumental role in the coming together of our disparate political parties into a strong opposition force. His efforts were pivotal in securing the electoral victory that led to my presidency,” Buhari stated.

Buhari lauded Fayemi’s resilience and grace in the face of political challenges, particularly his response to losing the Ekiti governorship in 2014. “When he lost the governorship election, he never carried any bitterness, even when some of his detractors stooped to calling him names and distorting his records. Any ordinary leader would have buckled, but Fayemi is made differently,” he remarked.

Fayemi’s successful return to office in 2018, Buhari added, was a testament to his strategic brilliance and enduring connection with the people.

“He went back to the drawing board, recalibrated, and returned to office with renewed vigour, continuing his mission of development in Ekiti State,” Buhari said, emphasizing that Fayemi’s leadership has always been guided by his commitment to the welfare of the people.

The tribute also acknowledged Fayemi’s broader contributions to Nigeria’s democratic evolution through his activism during the days of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) and other platforms advocating freedom and democratic governance.

Buhari credited Fayemi’s dedication to ensuring that Nigeria remains a country where every citizen is treated with fairness and dignity.

“I am truly proud of my association with Governor Fayemi as a party man, a minister, and a governor,” Buhari declared.

He concluded with prayers for Fayemi’s continued good health and long life, saying, “May the Almighty Lord grant him a long life in good health and keep him for the family, friends, and the nation.”
