The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has reiterated its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s energy security, creating jobs, and enhancing economic stability through strategic policies and initiatives.

At a stakeholder engagement with the National Assembly Press Corps yesterday in Abuja, NNPCL’s chief corporate communications officer, Olufemi Soneye, emphasised the company’s vital role in Nigeria’s economic development and ongoing efforts to maximise its vast energy resources.

“I’m glad to have you here again at this stakeholder engagement proudly sponsored by NNPC. I must say—it is truly heartwarming to see how it has brought us together.

“At NNPC, we believe in fueling not just vehicles but meaningful moments like this. Tonight is another night that NNPC will successfully power laughter and great partnerships,” he said.
Soneye highlighted that oil is more than just a commodity for nations like Nigeria; it is the backbone of economic growth, industrialisation, and social progress.

“It fuels transportation, powers industries, and generates revenues that support national development. The energy sector remains a major employer, creating opportunities for millions—from exploration fields to refining plants and beyond,” he stated.

Beyond its impact on the macroeconomy, he noted that oil plays an integral role in daily life, providing energy for homes, fueling transportation systems, and serving as the foundation for industries such as plastics, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture.

“Without oil, modern life as we know it would be vastly different,” he added.

Soneye underscored NNPC’s commitment to social development through its corporate social responsibility initiatives.

“We are committed to adding value to various sectors and communities across Nigeria. Through our NNPC Foundation, we have conducted 1,000 free cataract surgeries in the Southwest, restoring sight to dozens of individuals.

“We are set to perform another 1,000 surgeries in the North and an additional 1,000 in the Southeast and South-South before the end of the second quarter of 2025,” he said.

Furthermore, he revealed that NNPC is collaborating with Afreximbank to complete the African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE), a 500-bed hospital specialising in oncology, haematology, cardiology, and advanced medical training for Nigerians.

“This strategic investment aims to enhance access to specialised healthcare, ensuring that Nigerians receive world-class medical treatment. The AMCE is scheduled to commence operations in June 2025,” he stated.

Soneye also highlighted the achievements of the NNPC Medical Hospital in Abuja, which attended to 122,483 patients in 2024. The hospital provides critical care to accident victims and offers essential medical services, including radiology, physiotherapy, maternity care, dental and eye treatments, and life-saving surgeries.

“Across Nigeria, NNPC hospitals continue to play a pivotal role in improving healthcare access and saving lives. This is a direct demonstration of how NNPC is utilising oil revenues to positively impact the lives of Nigerians on a daily basis,” he added.

Soneye reaffirmed NNPC’s dedication to ensuring energy accessibility and economic stability and fostering global partnerships that strengthen Nigeria’s oil industry.

“Our responsibility is to harness this vital resource efficiently while aligning with global best practices in environmental sustainability and energy efficiency,” he said.
