Over 280 golfers from across Nigeria converged on Ado-Ekiti for the 2025 Ekiti Golf Club Captain’s Inaugural Tournament, marking a significant milestone for golf in the state. The two-day event, held on 1st-2nd March 2025, celebrated the induction of Tolu Falayi as the club’s new captain and showcased MTN Nigeria’s commitment to sports development.

Governor Biodun Oyebanji, represented by Chief of Staff Niyi Adebayo, pledged the state’s support for golf, highlighting its economic and health benefits. “We want many of our people to adopt the game, visit here regularly to play and enjoy themselves, while also reaping the health benefits of golf,” Adebayo stated.

The tournament, featuring categories for Gents (18-59 years old) and Veterans (60 and above), not only provided a competitive platform but also fostered business networking and tourism opportunities. Vice-Captain Olubunmi Albert emphasised the event’s role in positioning Ekiti as a golfing destination in Nigeria.

MTN Nigeria’s sponsorship aligns with its ongoing efforts to promote sports development across the country. The telecom giant’s involvement underscores the crucial role of private-sector partnerships in advancing sports infrastructure and grassroots engagement in Ekiti.

Awards will be presented across various categories, including Best Gross, Overall Net Winner, and specific recognitions for guests and club members. This inaugural tournament sets a promising tone for the future of golf in Ekiti under Captain Tolu Falayi’s two-year leadership.

The event also highlighted the potential for golf to contribute to Ekiti’s economic growth. With the influx of visitors from across Nigeria, local businesses benefited from increased patronage, demonstrating the broader impact of sports events on community development. As Ekiti continues to invest in its golf infrastructure, it is poised to attract more national and international tournaments, further solidifying its position as a hub for golf enthusiasts.

In addition to its economic benefits, the tournament reinforced the importance of community engagement and social interaction through sports. Participants praised the event for its warm atmosphere and the opportunity to connect with fellow golfers from diverse backgrounds. This sense of camaraderie is expected to continue under Captain Falayi’s leadership, as the club aims to host more inclusive and engaging events that appeal to both seasoned golfers and newcomers alike. With MTN Nigeria’s continued support, the Ekiti Golf Club is well-positioned to achieve its goals and contribute to the vibrant sports landscape in Nigeria.
