Following the death of 16-year-old Paul Victor, shot for trying to retrieve a ball from another compound, students of Urban Secondary School, World Bank Housing Estate, Owerri have vandalised the property of Barr Donald Mbamah, the man suspected to be behind the shooting.

Paul, a student of Urban Secondary School, was on Monday shot on the waist by Mbamah and later died on Thursday afternoon after a surgery on Wednesday.

Aggrieved students of the school, upon resumption on Friday, invaded Mbamah’s property and destroyed his parked jeep, power bike, windows amongst others, in protest for their school mate’s death.

While they lamented that Mbamah’s recklessness had cost Paul his life, they threatened to avenge his untimely death even as they destroyed several choice-properties.

Police operatives later arrived and restored calm to the troubled area which had caused panic among residents.

Meanwhile, the Imo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of the 64-year-old Mbamah on Monday by operatives of the New Owerri Police division adding that the case has been transferred to the state headquarters for further investigation.

“The Imo State Police Command expresses its condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and assures the public that justice will be pursued to the fullest extent of the law. The suspect will be arraigned in court once investigations are completed and sufficient evidence is gathered.

“The Command also call on the public to refrain from taking laws into their hands and allow the police and relevant authorities to handle the matter through legal means,” Okoye said.

Meanwhile, sources said it was an emotional scene at the Umuguma Specialist Hospital Owerri on Friday morning when the late Paul Victor’s family arrived to take his corpse as his siblings and passers-by wailed.

The guardian of the late Paul, Mr Jonathan Odikanwa had confirmed on Thursday that the teenager gave up the ghost despite efforts to keep him alive.

According to him, the x-ray didn’t show the bullet in the body but doctors had to operate Paul when it was discovered that his bowel movements were impeded.
