Super Eagles duo Joe Aribo and Paul Onuachu have experienced the heartbreak of relegation with their club Southampton from the Premier League, following a 3-1 defeat to Tottenham yesterday.
Southampton has not only become the first team to be relegated this season but has also set a record for the earliest relegation in Premier League history, with seven matches still remaining to play.
So far, the team has managed just 10 points from 31 matches, suffering a staggering 25 losses along the way. Brennan Johnson lit up the first half with two goals, while Mateus Fernandes’ late consolation proved too little too late, as the bottom-of-the-table Saints were sent crashing back to the Championship.
In comparison, Ipswich and Derby were relegated with six games left in the 1994-95 and 2007-08 seasons, respectively. Notably, Southampton’s current points tally is just one shy of matching Derby’s record low of 11 points from the 2007-08 Premier League season.
As the dust settles on this disheartening chapter, it remains to be seen whether Onuachu and Aribo will be playing together in the English Championship next season.
