The Rotary D9127 Clubs in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have teamed up with the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) to raise awareness among traders and consumers at Wuse Market about the risks of chemical preservation of beans.

During the campaign titled “Say No to Chemical Preservation of Beans,” Rotarian Rabi Mohammed, president of RC Abuja Urban and the Presidents of Rotary Clubs in the FCT, spoke on behalf of District Governor Rotarian Mike Nwanoshiri. She highlighted the initiative’s goal to educate the public on safer food preservation methods and to mitigate health risks linked to chemical preservatives.

“Our initiative, part of Rotary’s 2024-2025 projects, aims to inform the public about the dangers of chemical food preservation, which can lead to serious health issues such as kidney and liver damage, and even cancer,” she stated.

Mohammed emphasised the collaboration with AEPB, stating, “As environmental concerns are a key focus for Rotary, we aim to promote healthier alternatives and encourage mindfulness about food safety.”
The initiative also explores ways to reduce chemical usage in food preservation and advocates for a ban on harmful substances, with AEPB playing a vital role in enforcing regulations. They are providing alternatives, like reusable bags, to help individuals adopt safer methods.

Highlighting the urgent need to curb the indiscriminate use of chemicals in food storage, she noted that Rotary Clubs and AEPB are working together to enhance public health practices.

Kate Ogbonna, representing the Director of AEPB, reiterated the importance of community education on safe food preservation to prevent health issues linked to chemical preservatives, including food poisoning and cancer.

The initiative aims to empower individuals to prioritise their health by providing essential information and promoting informed choices.

Rotarian Oro-ghene Adia, Project Director for Rotary Clubs in the FCT, stated that this campaign focuses on educating the public, particularly in markets like Wuse, about the dangers of chemical food preservation.

He encouraged safer methods, such as using airtight containers and freezing food, to minimise reliance on chemicals. Over 40 Rotary Clubs in the FCT are collaborating with AEPB to empower consumers with the knowledge needed to make informed choices about food preservation.
