The Nigerian contingent showcased an impressive campaign, securing a total of 18 medals — 13 gold, 4 silver, and 1 bronze — reinforcing Nigeria’s status as a dominant force in African weightlifting.
Outstanding individual performances characterised Team Nigeria’s success, particularly from Sarah Ovayioza, who won three gold medals in the women’s 76kg category, and Ruth Imoleayo Ayodele, who achieved a clean sweep in the 64kg division. Onome Omolola Didih and Rafiatu Folashade Lawal also excelled, each earning three gold medals in the 55kg and 59kg categories, respectively.

Moreover, Team Nigeria was awarded the title of best female team of the tournament, a reflection of the substantial number of gold medals secured by the women athletes. Onome Didih distinguished herself by being named the Best Lifter in the women’s category, a well-deserved accolade following her dominance in the 55kg class.

On the men’s side, Umoafia Joseph Edidiong and Tuesday Emmanuel made significant contributions to the medal tally with their impressive performances.

In response to the team’s success, Mallam Shehu Dikko, chairman of the NSC, commended the weightlifters for their commitment and patriotic spirit.

“This victory is a remarkable achievement not just for our athletes, but for the entire nation,” Dikko remarked. “Our weightlifters have displayed extraordinary resilience and determination throughout this championship. Their success is a testament to their hard work and the unwavering support they have received. This performance demonstrates that with the right backing and focus, Nigeria can continue to excel in international sports.”

Dikko urged the athletes to maintain their focus and strive for excellence as they prepare for larger events such as the World Championships and Commonwealth Games. “The NSC remains dedicated to providing the necessary support to help you reach even greater heights,” he concluded.

Hon. Bukola Olopade, director general of the NSC, also expressed immense pride in the athletes’ achievements, noting that their performance has uplifted the spirit of the entire nation.

“We stand firmly behind you,” Olopade stated. “When I visited you prior to the championship, I promised that you would be rewarded for your hard work. Today, I am glad to say that you will return home with not only medals but also well-deserved financial rewards. You have not only made your country proud but also lifted the spirit of millions of Nigerians. I encourage you to continue this fighting spirit and prepare even harder for future competitions. You are true champions and determined fighters.”

The NSC reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing and empowering athletes across all sports, ensuring that Team Nigeria continues to thrive on the international stage.

In addition to monetary rewards for the athletes, four of them have now been classified in Category A of elite athletes and are set to receive $20,000 in training grants from the NSC, preparing for the World Championships, Commonwealth Games, and ultimately the Olympic Games.
