Kenya is reeling from the assassination of opposition Member of Parliament, Charles Ong’ondo Were, who was gunned down in Nairobi late Wednesday in what authorities described as a “targeted and predetermined” attack.

The legislator, who represented Kasipul constituency under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), was ambushed along Ngong Road near a busy roundabout known for its police presence and surveillance cameras. Gunmen on a motorcycle had reportedly trailed his vehicle before one assailant dismounted and shot the MP at close range.

Police confirmed the attack and described it as a calculated hit. “The nature of this crime appears to be both targeted and predetermined,” said police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga in an official statement.

According to eyewitness reports and local authorities, Were’s driver and bodyguard, both unharmed during the shooting, rushed the wounded MP to Nairobi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The late parliamentarian had reportedly raised concerns about threats to his life just two months ago, according to local media.

The brazen nature of the attack has sent shockwaves across the nation. President William Ruto condemned the killing and directed law enforcement agencies to launch a thorough investigation. “Those responsible must be held to account,” he declared.

ODM party leader and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who led tributes from the opposition, denounced the killing in the strongest terms. “Charles was mercilessly and in cold blood, gunned down by an assassin,” Odinga said. “We have lost a gallant son of the soil!”

Parliament Speaker Moses Wetang’ula also mourned the slain legislator, describing him as a “fearless and distinguished” leader. “His shooting is devastating,” he said.

Several MPs and political figures gathered at the crime scene late Wednesday, expressing grief and outrage. Many echoed calls for justice and demanded expedited investigations to apprehend those behind the killing.

Were’s death adds to growing concerns about political violence and security in Kenya, particularly as the country navigates a delicate balance between government and opposition forces following the controversial 2022 elections.

Though Odinga initially rejected the election results, he later entered into a political agreement with President Ruto, forming what is now known as a “broad-based government.” This uneasy alliance has brought together some opposition figures and members of the ruling coalition, but tensions have remained.

As investigations continued, Kenya awaits answers and justice in what is now one of the most high-profile political killings in recent Kenyan history.
