On Thursday, May 8, 2025, the Catholic Church made history with the election of Pope Leo XIV, formerly known as Robert Prevost, as its 266th Pontiff.

He succeeds Pope Francis, who died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025.

This monumental event marked the first time an American has risen to the highest office in the Church, ushering in a new era characterised by reform, global perspective, and deep pastoral experience.

Born on September 14, 1955, in the United States, Robert Prevost, 69, embraced his faith through the Order of Saint Augustine (OSA). As a young Augustinian, he quickly emerged as a leader, serving as the Prior General of the Order of Saint Augustine from 2001 to 2013. During this period, he championed initiatives that expanded the Order’s outreach globally, emphasising unity and pastoral care.

Though American by birth, Pope Leo XIV’s heart and ministry have deep roots in Latin America. From 2015 to 2023, he served as the Bishop of Chiclayo in Peru, a role that not only solidified his pastoral credentials but also led to him becoming a naturalised Peruvian citizen.

During his tenure in Chiclayo, he was known for his hands-on approach to ministry, focusing on community development, poverty alleviation, and clergy formation. His work in Peru positioned him as a bridge between the Latin American Church and the Vatican, a perspective he now brings to his papacy.

In 2023, Pope Leo XIV was appointed Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, a position that placed him at the epicenter of Vatican governance. This role involved overseeing the appointment of bishops worldwide, a critical function in shaping the future of the Church.

Simultaneously, he was named President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, further emphasising his strong ties to the region. These roles prepared him for his eventual election as pope, providing him with firsthand experience in the complex dynamics of global Catholic leadership.

At 69-years-old, Pope Leo XIV is widely regarded as a reformer. His American background and extensive experience in Latin America suggest he may prioriti#e issues such as social justice, transparency in Church governance, and greater inclusivity within the global Catholic community.

Despite being the first American to hold the papacy, Pope Leo XIV’s approach is expected to transcend national identities, focusing instead on uniting the Church across cultural and geographical boundaries.

With a rich background in both the Americas and the Vatican, Pope Leo XIV is expected to focus on the issues below:

Strengthening Global Church Ties: Promoting unity within a diverse Catholic population.

Empowering Local Clergy: Advocating for greater representation and leadership opportunities for bishops in underserved regions.

Addressing Social Issues: Emphasizing social justice, poverty alleviation, and the Church’s role in global crises.

Fostering Transparency: Implementing reforms to address financial and administrative challenges within the Vatican.

As the Church enters a new era under his leadership, Pope Leo XIV stands as a symbol of unity and reform — a man whose journey from the Americas to the Vatican reflects the universal nature of the Catholic faith.
