Speaking during the commissioning and handing over ceremony yesterday, the agency’s director general, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, said the structure, commissioned as a national asset, would provide a knowledge platform to equip the nation with tools, talent, and infrastructure to safeguard digital spaces and empower the next generation of cybersecurity experts.

Abdullahi, who was represented by the northwest zonal coordinator, Dr Jide Ajayi, explained that the centre represents a strategic intervention by NITDA to support cybersecurity education, capacity development, and innovation research and development, which are essential for achieving the aspirations of President Tinubu’s Renew Home Agenda and the communication minister’s strategic blueprint for the digital economy.

He added that the centre would serve as a springboard for cross-sector collaboration between government, academia, and industry.

ā€œCybersecurity has become a critical enabler of trust in the digital economy. As digital transformation accelerates, so do the risks associated with data breaches, cyber threats, and digital vulnerabilities. This centre reflects our deliberate investment in proactive solutions, blending research, innovation, training, and collaboration to fortify our national digital ecosystem.

ā€œIt will support cybersecurity research, facilitate hands-on training, and serve as a resource for national and regional stakeholders protecting Nigeria’s critical digital infrastructure,ā€ he stated.

In his remarks, BUK vice chancellor, Prof. Sagir Abbas, said the donation of the structure represents partnership, foresight and the federal government’s commitment to equipping universities with critical infrastructure.

While thanking NITDA for the contribution, he said it would impact cybersecurity education and digital innovation in Nigeria.

He noted that BUK offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in cybersecurity and has arranged to commence a Doctor of Philosophy programme, hinting that the centre will enhance teaching, research, training, and innovation.
