OXFAM, GIZ, and other partner organisations have completed a gender equality project that impacted 2,773 community members in two LGAs of Adamawa State.

OXFAM Nigeria country director Daniel McCommick, speaking at the program’s closeout workshop in Yola, advocated for the adoption of women’s participation in politics and leadership as a right and not a rare exception.

He appreciated Governor Ahmadu Fintiri for the opportunities he has given to women and called for further improvement.

He suggested institutionalising gender-sensitive governance that prioritises the voices and needs of the most marginalised, particularly women, girls, and displaced communities.

OXFAM, GIZ, and other partner organisations have been implementing the project Promoting the Rights of Women and Improving Gender Equality Through Conflict Sensitive Approaches (WoRGE Project) since December 2023.

Through the project funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Development (BMZ) and European Union (EU), OXFAM, GIZ, CRUDAN, and CEPAD reached out to 2,773 women, men, and people with disabilities in Michika and Guyuk LGAs over the 18 months, enhancing their confidence level and raising their economic and leadership skills through capacity training and mentorship.

OXFAM Nigeria’s project coordinator for the Women’s Rights and Gender Equality Project in Adamawa State, Olawunmi Gbolahan, explained to newsmen at the Yola workshop that the project, which targeted 800 people in the two focal LGAs, ended up covering 2,773 people.

She said the project was highly transformative and created ripple effects that widened rapidly.
