A marketing communications expert, Adeola Amosun, has highlighted the place of perseverance, visibility, and strong professional relationships as critical pillars of success in today’s competitive communications landscape.

As he marked his 11th year in the industry with a reflective post on LinkedIn, Amosun shared 11 key lessons he has learned since switching from a potential career in finance to one in marketing communications.

The decision, made over a decade ago, set him on a path that would see him work with global giants such as Radio House, Dentsu, Procter & Gamble, Diageo, Beiersdorf, Coca-Cola, and PZ Wilmar.

One of his most defining moments came early in his career when he had to choose between a job offer from a financial institution and a position at a marketing agency.

Despite the agency role being less secure, he opted for it because it aligned more closely with his communications background. However, the start was anything but easy.

“I didn’t even tell many of my friends about the job until the fourth month,” Amosun revealed in the post. Thrust into managing a Fortune 50 account with minimal experience, he found himself battling self-doubt and pressure. He responded by putting in long hours, often working weekends and staying late at the office to get a handle on his responsibilities.

The struggles he faced as a rookie came full circle years later when a young team member broke down during a feedback session. Recognizing the pressure she was under, Amosun shared his own early-career experiences, reassuring her that such challenges were not unique.

Throughout his reflection, Amosun emphasised the power of relationships. He explained that while competence can open doors, genuine connections are what sustain a career. “Competence will get you noticed, but it’s relationships that bring lasting opportunities,” he wrote.

He also reflected on the importance of self-promotion and visibility, admitting he once believed hard work alone would earn recognition. “I played the humble card too much,” Amosun stated, acknowledging that excellence must be accompanied by strategic visibility and personal narrative.
