The President made his remarks in the capital while being represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume. He emphasised the current administration’s commitment to fostering national unity through various sporting initiatives, which are generously backed by the Federal Government.

“We reiterate our dedication to promoting peace through sports,” said Tinubu during the event.
The arrival of the King’s Baton in Nigeria on June 27 has been hailed as a symbol of the nation’s commitment to the Commonwealth family and the values it embodies. Tinubu described the baton’s journey as more than just a relay; it is an opportunity to highlight Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage, diverse communities, and immense potential.

“This event allows us to reaffirm our dedication to peace and sustainable development through the unifying power of sports,” he added. “We recognise the symbolism of this baton, akin to the Olympic Torch, igniting collective passion, anticipation, and renewed determination as we approach the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.”

Tinubu commended Nigeria’s athletes for their outstanding performances on the global stage, which have brought pride and honour to the nation. “Since our first participation in 1950, Nigeria has continued to shine, and we are determined to build upon these successes,” he remarked.

He also praised the leadership of the National Sports Commission (NSC), recognising their professionalism in establishing Nigeria as a leading sporting nation in Africa. “Sports have become a key driver of the economy, aligned with international standards, thanks to the NSC’s efforts,” he said.

The President urged athletes to train diligently and embrace the spirit of sportsmanship, as they represent the hopes of 250 million Nigerians. He revealed that reforms are underway to harness the potential of the youth and encouraged both public and private sectors to support these initiatives.

NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko said the event also served as a platform to announce Nigeria’s intention to bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games. “Subject to Presidential approval, Nigeria intends to formally bid to host the 2030 Centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games,” he stated. “We are prepared to welcome the world and stage a monumental event that will leave a lasting impact on our continent and the global sporting community. With our passion, infrastructure, and talent, we can deliver a truly historic Games for the next century of the Commonwealth.”

Dikko added that the King’s Baton Relay underscores that values such as sportsmanship, inclusion, and mutual respect are not mere ideals but tangible realities.
