As part of its contribution to the development of its immediate community, the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt GRA has donated a solar-powered borehole system to Model Secondary School, GRA, Port Harcourt.
Also donated to the school, which is located in the heart of Port Harcourt, the state capital, was traffic safety enhancements as well as the repairs and beautification of its perimeter fence.
Commissioning the projects on Thursday, District Governor of Rotary International District 9141, Rtn. Anthony Woghiren, applauded the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt GRA for embarking on such projects at a time of severe economic hardship.
Woghiren said: “It is not easy to pull funds together and say you want to do projects, especially in the current economic situation, which is very tough. When a club decides that they want to do something for you, you should be very appreciative of it.”
He charged the students of Model Secondary School, GRA, Port Harcourt, to ensure that they protect the projects as their personal projects.
The District Governor said: “So, I will start with the children, you see all the things we have some for you, protect them like your personal property. So that nothing will happen to them. If anything happens to them, we will not fix it.
“I am telling you ahead now because we will always come to check how you are managing them. If you manage them very well, it will encourage us to come back here and do more.”
In his welcome remarks, President of Rotary Club of Port Harcourt GRA, Dr. Patterson Ogon, said the interest of the club was to embark on projects that have a direct impact on the community.
Ogon said: “Our interest is to embark on those projects that have direct impact on the community that we live in. We thought it wise to come here, having known that they have some challenges to make these provisions and also to ensure that because, students use the road, provide also a traffic advisory.
“Vehicles that ply this road will understand that students use this road and slow down whenever they get there. We are concerned that this is our community and we will continue to come here to be part of you and we will also love that partnership to continue.”
