A suspected vandal on Monday night died when he attempted to steal the cables connected to some poles on Poultry Street, New Airport Road in Calabar South local government area of Cross River State.
The victim whose identity was yet to be established as of the time of filing this report, was electrocuted on the high tension cables.
Sources said he was a resident of the neighbouring Antigha community. The incident reportedly occurred at 1: 30 am when the power supply tripped off and unknown to him that it would be restored immediately.
Among the items found on him were a plier and a pair of short socks.
When LEADERSHIP visited the scene of the incident, it was discovered that the deceased lived on Antigha Road in the neighbouring.
Some residents of the community gathered at the scene to watch the lifeless body of the victims hanging on the high tension cables.
One of the residents, who simply gave his name as Sylvester, said, “It’s Nemesis that has caught up with the electricity vandal. There are instances we raised money to assist service providers with electricity installations.
“As soon as we do that, the items will be vandalised. These are the people behind destruction of transformers we frequently experience,” Sylvester said.
As of the time of filing in this report, no official statement had be made by either the law enforcement agencies nor officials of the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) on the incident.
