The President of the Portuguese Football Association, Pedro Proenca, has defended Cristiano Ronaldo following his absence from Diogo Jota’s funeral.
Ronaldo, the captain of the national team, faced backlash for not attending, while team-mates Bruno Fernandes, Ruben Dias, and Bernardo Silva were present.
It is believed that Ronaldo chose to stay away to prevent overshadowing the occasion.
Proenca has now responded to the criticism. “And I will reiterate: what has been said about our captain is unjust. Cristiano Ronaldo felt this loss deeply, particularly as he was a true team-mate of Jota. His physical absence means nothing more than that; he has never abandoned this family,” Proenca stated.
