With the onset of the rainy season and rising tensions between farmers and herders, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has reiterated its resolve to prevent further clashes and safeguard agricultural assets across Bauchi State.
Adamu Muhammad, the second-in-command of the NSCDC’s Agro Rangers Unit in Bauchi, made this known during an exclusive interview with our correspondent in his office.
He emphasised the corps’ proactive strategies to avert conflicts, particularly in rural farming communities.
“We are deeply concerned about the recent incident in Darazo, and we are ramping up our engagement with all stakeholders, including farmers, herders, traditional leaders, and local authorities, to ensure peaceful coexistence,” Muhammad said.
The Agro Rangers, a special unit under the NSCDC, have been deployed to flashpoints across the state to de-escalate tensions and protect vital agro-infrastructure from damage or sabotage.
According to Muhammad, the unit’s work is even more critical during the rainy season, when land use disputes become more frequent.
He called on community leaders and residents to collaborate with security operatives by reporting early signs of conflict. He stressed that the corps remains committed to ensuring farming activities continue without fear or violence.
It should be recalled that about two weeks ago, the Bauchi government, under the state deputy governor, Auwal Jatau, constituted a committee on farmers-herder clashes. The committee was set up following a wave of violence between farmers and herders in the Darazo community.
