Former speaker of the House of Representatives, Senator Aminu Tambuwal, has said the 10th National Assembly has a duty to renew the faith of Nigerians in the power of dialogue, unity and constitutional order as it concludes work on the current constitution amendment exercise.

Tambuwal, a former governor who now represents Sokoto South in the Senate, said this against the backdrop of the two-day joint retreat of the National Assembly Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution which was held in Lagos State recently.

The federal lawmaker, on his X handle, said every amendment considered must serve the collective interest of the people and strengthen the pillars of justice, equity, and good governance.
Tambuwal said, “My colleagues and I commenced the two-day joint retreat of the National Assembly Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution holding in Lagos.

“It has been a rigorous two years coming, engaging stakeholders critical to this exercise. From CSOs, FBOs, institutions, and diverse interest groups through town hall meetings, interactive sessions, and public hearings, we have listened, reviewed, and documented the aspirations of Nigerians. Today, we have before us 69 bills, 55 state creation proposals, 278 local government requests, and two boundary adjustment considerations, all reflecting the voices of Nigerians from every part of the country.

“The Constitution remains the foundation of our democracy and the instrument through which we shape the future of our nation. This retreat offers us another opportunity to reflect on how far we have come and how much further we must go in building a fair, functional, and inclusive federation.

“The task before us is demanding, but it is one we must carry out with sincerity and clarity of purpose. Every clause we review, every amendment we consider, must serve the collective interest of our people and strengthen the pillars of justice, equity, and good governance.

“Our duty is not only to amend words on paper but to renew the faith of Nigerians in the power of dialogue, unity, and constitutional order. I am hopeful that our deliberations will move us closer to a Nigeria that works better for all,” he said.
