Insecurity: Governor Sule Praises Tinubu’s Handling Of US Security Concerns

Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has lauded President Bola Tinubu for his “calm and mature” response to US President Donald Trump’s remarks regarding insecurity in Nigeria.

Recall that Trump recently designated Nigeria as a ‘Country of Particular Concern’ (CPC) and criticised the Nigerian government, citing widespread reports of genocide against Christians.

Speaking on Arise TV’s Prime Time show on Tuesday, Sule commended Tinubu’s composure throughout the period, praising the president for avoiding public rancour.

“I’m happy with the maturity Mr President approached it with. Even after the tweet from Trump, he didn’t follow the rancour from several people saying you should do this or that. He was calm throughout,” Sule said.

The governor, who previously lived in the United States, stressed that American involvement is often guided by its national interests.

“Somebody who lives in America like me knows that America can only take care of American interests. Anywhere you touch American interests, America will come in. So when you hear all those things, it is purely American interest at play,” he said.

Sule noted that the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, engaged directly with US officials, including the Secretary of State and representatives from the Defence Department, to arrange assistance.

He also commented on the recent confirmation by the Federal Government of a possible joint security pact with the United States, which could involve intelligence sharing and the provision of weapons. On that note, the governor said seeking support abroad was not only necessary but also strategic.

“It’s more than the solution to look for help abroad, not only from America but from any nation willing to assist Nigeria.

“In addition to assistance from America, we need support from our neighbours, Niger, Chad, Cameroon, because they can also play a significant role in helping us, ” Sule added.

He maintained that the majority of some of the bandits coming into the country are not even Nigerians and emphasised the need for regional cooperation alongside foreign assistance to tackle insecurity.
