The National Sports Commission (NSC) is poised to grant official recognition to Nigeria’s Flag Football Federation, with immediate elections for executive members planned upon its inauguration.
The NSC has clarified that, to date, no national or international body has been authorised to represent Nigeria in international flag football competitions. The Commission further stressed that no group or association currently holds official recognition to act on behalf of the nation.
In adherence to its statutory duties, the NSC reiterated that it is the sole authority under Nigerian law empowered to recognise, approve, and regulate all sports federations, including those for flag football.
The Director General of the National Sports Commission commented on the ongoing process, stating:
“The National Sports Commission is currently engaging all stakeholders in Flag Football regarding the finalization of a unified national federation. NSC values the contributions of all groups and is committed to an inclusive governance structure that aligns with international standards and Nigeria’s sports development objectives. The process of recognition is ongoing and no decision has been finalized.”
The NSC has assured athletes, coaches, organisations, and international partners that the forthcoming Flag Football Federation will be founded on principles of transparency, inclusivity, and global best practices, guaranteeing proper Nigerian representation in international events.
Further details regarding the election timetable, membership requirements, and transitional arrangements are expected to be released by the Commission in the coming days.
