Former Nigerian international Sam Sodje has expressed concerns over Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle’s decision to invite an extensive 54-man squad for pre-tournament preparations ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Sodje’s comments came after Chelle announced his provisional squad for the 35th AFCON, which will take place in Morocco. The three-time champions Nigeria are drawn in Group C, alongside Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania, as they aim for a strong performance in the tournament.
The team is set to commence their training camp in Egypt on December 10, where they will engage in warm-up matches before kicking off the tournament on December 21.
Speaking on Brila FM, Sodje questioned the rationale behind the large squad, particularly given the limited time for training. “I find it perplexing to call up 54 players. It’s confusing to include both regulars and newcomers. What’s the need for such a lengthy list? We should maintain a positive outlook and focus on our performance,” he stated.
