The executive secretary/CEO of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Dr Tony Ojukwu (SAN), has harped on the timeless message embedded in the promotion, protection and enforcement of human rights for all Nigerians.

Ojukwu, who was represented by the Edo State coordinator of the NHRC, Olumide Dosumu, spoke yesterday during a visit to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Benin City. The visit was part of activities marking the commission’s 30th anniversary celebration and the 2025 International Human Rights Day.

“This year’s event is a special one. It commemorates the 30th anniversary of Nigeria’s National Human Rights Institution (NHRI),” he said.

“We proudly celebrate 30 years of service to humanity since our establishment in 1995. This event is also significant as it provides the Commission with the opportunity to recognize outstanding partners who have supported our work over the years.”

According to him, the celebration represents both a journey and a reaffirmation “a journey that began in 1995 with a vision for a Nigeria rooted in the principles of freedom, equality, and justice, and a reaffirmation that, despite the challenges we face from insecurity to socio-economic and political problems our commitment remains unwavering.”

He noted that the spirit of the gathering echoes the enduring call to uphold human rights for all Nigerians.

“Our walk today is not rooted in protest, but in unity. Not in anger, but with a firm resolve to uphold human rights. Not as spectators, but as active participants in shaping a Nigeria where every right is protected, every voice matters, and no one is left behind.

“Our celebration today is a reminder that human rights flourish where communities embrace harmony, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence.”

Speaking on the awards scheduled to be presented, Dr. Ojukwu described them as a tribute to individuals and organizations who, through courage and consistency, have supported the human rights cause and strengthened the Commission’s work.

He reaffirmed the NHRC’s commitment to its 30-year mandate of protecting, promoting, and enforcing human rights in Nigeria, noting that the task cannot be carried out by the Commission alone.

“It must be carried out by every one of us, government ministries, departments and agencies, the private sector, and indeed all Nigerians.

“Together, let us build a nation where human rights are not merely aspirational ideals, but daily realities. Let us continue to dream, to act, and to stand firm, knowing that our collective effort is the engine that drives progress,” he added.
