Egor Local Government Area made history on Sunday by securing the inaugural Benin Unity Cup, triumphing over Ovia North East LGA with a 3–1 victory in a dramatic penalty shootout at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.
The highly anticipated final concluded goalless after regulation time, with both teams showcasing disciplined defending and tactical prowess. The deadlock ultimately led to a tense shootout, where Egor LGA displayed superior composure to clinch the coveted trophy.
The tournament, which brought together the seven local government areas of Edo South, attracted a large and enthusiastic crowd throughout its duration. Organised with the aim of fostering unity, promoting sportsmanship, and developing grassroots football talent across the district, the competition proved a resounding success.
Earlier in the day, the third-place playoff saw Oredo I and Oredo II battle to a 1–1 draw. Oredo I subsequently secured the bronze medal, emerging victorious with a 5–3 win in their penalty shootout.
The final match was preceded by a special novelty game, held in honour of the competition’s host and sponsor, Senator Neda Imasuen, who represents the Edo South Senatorial District. Team Neda Imasuen emerged 1–0 winners against a side comprising former Edo State-born international players, with Senator Imasuen himself netting the decisive goal early in the contest.
Speaking at the event, Senator Imasuen reiterated that the tournament’s primary objective was to empower young people and unearth promising football talents. He also pledged a larger and even more impactful edition of the competition in 2026.
Organisers revealed that at least 35 players had been identified for further development through the tournament. As champions, Egor LGA received a prize of N1 million, while Ovia North East took home N700,000. Oredo I was awarded N500,000 for their third-place finish, and the fourth-placed team received N250,000.
