Embrace Politics Of Purpose Ahead 2027 – Masari Charges Politicians

Former governor of Katsina State, Aminu Bello Masari, has urged political actors across Nigeria to embrace what he described as “politics of purpose” ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning against divisive rhetoric and self-serving ambitions.

Masari, who is also the chairman of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), made the call on Saturday while delivering a speech during the 17th convocation ceremony at Al-Qalam University, Katsina, where he was honoured alongside other distinguished personalities.

He said the period leading to the next general elections demands patriotism, restraint and maturity from leaders at all levels.

Masari noted that even long-established democracies have faced political instabilities in recent times, stressing that Nigeria’s comparatively fragile political structures make responsible conduct even more critical.

“Democratic competition should be about offering citizens choices, not turning the political space into a theatre of conflict,” he said.

He urged politicians to conduct their engagements with respect for the law, national interest and decency, cautioning leaders against exploiting emotions and divisions for personal gain.

According to him, patriotism must take precedence over ego and ambition, especially in a plural society where communal trust is often delicate.

Masari added that enlightened leadership requires collaboration and constructive criticism rooted in superior ideas that promote good governance, equity, fairness, due process and inclusive development.

The former governor used the occasion to highlight the role of universities in shaping Nigeria’s future.

He reminded stakeholders that Al-Qalam University was founded as an Islamic institution grounded in moral values under Sharia, and urged that character formation should remain central to its mission.

He also stressed that a strong orientation toward technology is no longer optional for Nigerian universities. With the global environment becoming more interconnected and competitive, he said graduates must be equipped with practical and relevant skills.

Masari encouraged young people to embrace technology and apply it to key sectors such as agriculture, security, healthcare, service delivery and mineral exploration, describing innovation as essential to national development.

Describing Al-Qalam University as a symbol of resilience that has survived numerous challenges, Masari called on stakeholders to use the institution’s current stability to plan strategically for the future.

He said societal growth would require the creation of new departments, expansion of faculties, and acquisition of additional land, especially for programmes that need demonstration fields, laboratories, and other specialised facilities.

Drawing from his experience as a former governor and “chief host” of the institution, Masari emphasised the importance of maintaining cordial relations between the university and the Katsina State Government, noting the mutual benefits of such cooperation.
