PDP Calls For Calm, Vows To Appeal Nullification Of Ibadan Convention

The Imo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has hailed the judgment of a Federal High Court in Ibadan yesterday which  according to them rightly nullified the alleged jamboree National Convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State on November 15, 2025.

While voiding the convention as illegal, the court barred Aminu Turaki and others from parading themselves as national officers of the PDP.

It also ruled that the Caretaker Committee led by Abdulrahman Mohammed and Senator Samuel Anyanwu is the only recognised NWC of the PDP pending the conduct of a valid National Convention.

The party recalled that when the masterminds of the now annulled convention had set out on what  they termed  an ignoble mission and thought they had their way, Imo PDP was upfront and straightforward in rubbishing the event as illegal and unconstitutional, and therefore of no consequence on the structure of the party.

“We equally added our voices to the litany of condemnations which trailed the show of shame in Ibadan, describing it as mere gathering of a lawless Committee of Friends for a tea party, of which the conveners ludicrously attempted to overreach themselves,” the party said.

This was made known through a statement made available to newsmen by the state publicity secretary, PDP, Imo State, Lancelot Obiaku in Owerri yesterday.

Imo PDP noted that the plotters of the meeting, in their desperation, desecrated the party’s constitution, the Electoral Act, and the constitution of the country with a phantom convention that paraded suspended and expelled members as part of the organizers, without delegates from Ebonyi, Anambra and Enugu States and thirteen other States, which had no valid State Executive.

According to them, they also disobeyed binding and subsisting judgments of the Federal High Court, Abuja, delivered by Hon. Justice James Omotosho on October 31, 2025, and Hon. Justice Peter Odo Lifu on November 14, 2025, which, on accounts of the obvious abuse of process, constitutional infractions and other irregularities, including the usurpation of the powers and functions of the National Secretary and National Organizing Secretary, ordered the halt of any convention until the party complies with its constitution and guidelines.

“It was instructive to make it clear that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) obeyed the court judgments and refused to monitor or validate the illegal convention. INEC’s principled position was seen as a powerful reinforcement of the fact that the impunity exhibited in the Ibadan assembly, or any decision reached there, cannot stand.”

The Imo State chapter of PDP sees today’s judgment as a victory for constitutional democracy, institutional order, rule of law, and internal party democracy.

“We are therefore upbeat that the judgment will go a long way to further stabilize and strengthen our party, boost the confidence of Nigerians and Imolites in it, having shutdown the efforts of detractors and paved the way for the party to continue thriving as Nigeria’s leading opposition party.

“Imo PDP reiterates its confidence in the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led National Caretaker Committee and our leader in the State and National Secretary of the Caretaker Committee, Sen. Samuel Anyanwu; Sen. Mao Ohuabunwa as BOT Chairman; and Hon. Austin Nwachukwu as our State Chairman.”
