FCT Police Urge NLC To Suspend Tuesday’s Protest, Warn Of Infiltration Threat

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has urged the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), FCT Council, to consider rescheduling its planned peaceful protest slated for Tuesday, February 3, 2026, citing intelligence reports of possible infiltration by proscribed groups.

The Police Command, in a statement issued on Monday by its spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, emphasised that while it recognises and respects citizens’ constitutional rights to peaceful assembly, credible intelligence suggested that some non-state actors intended to hijack the protest to cause chaos.

“The Command respects the constitutional right to peaceful assembly,” SP Adeh wrote in a post on her Facebook page. “However, intelligence reports indicate plans by proscribed groups and other non-state actors to infiltrate and hijack the protest, posing a risk to public peace and safety.”

She explained that the decision to advise the NLC to postpone the protest was taken in the interest of public safety and to prevent any potential breakdown of law and order within the federal capital city.

“In the interest of public safety, the FCT Police Command has advised the organizers to consider rescheduling the protest to prevent any breakdown of law and order and to protect lives, property, and the rights of other residents,” the statement read.

SP Adeh reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to protecting lawful activities in the territory, assuring residents that security agencies remained on alert to maintain peace and stability.

“The Command remains committed to safeguarding all lawful activities and urges residents to continue cooperating with security agencies to keep the FCT peaceful and secure,” the Police spokesperson added.
