Kebbi State government, in its commitment to providing equal education for all, has sponsored 35 children from poor families to study medicine and pharmacy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
When bidding them farewell at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi, Governor Nasir Idris said under his administration, no child would be treated as a second-class citizen in the state.
He added that his administration remains people-oriented and resolute in delivering quality education to the people of the state.
The governor lamented that previous sponsorship programmes were dominated only by children from wealthy backgrounds or families, adding that his administration has deliberately prioritised brilliant and talented students from humble backgrounds.
He advised the students to remain focused, disciplined, and to concentrate on their studies; to avoid negative influences; and to seek help from government officials whenever the need arises.
He assured them of the government’s support and promised to visit them during one of his routine stopovers in Addis Ababa.
The commissioner for Higher Education, Isah Abubakar Tunga, had earlier informed the governor that three of the 35 students would study pharmacy, and the rest would study medicine.
