Rivers Commits To Reducing Cancer Burden Through Strengthened Healthcare Systems

The Rivers State government has reiterated its commitment to reducing the burden of cancer through effective policies, strengthened healthcare systems, and strategic partnerships.

The State’s Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Oreh, who disclosed this on Wednesday in a speech to mark the World Cancer Day, said the state government was also investing in the training of healthcare professionals and upgrading health facilities to provide better cancer care.

“As a government, we remain committed to reducing the burden of cancer through effective policies, strengthened healthcare systems, and strategic partnerships. Our focus includes improving cancer prevention programs, expanding screening and diagnostic services, and ensuring treatment and care are accessible and affordable by all citizens.

“We are also investing in the training of healthcare professionals and upgrading health facilities to provide better cancer care,” Oreh said.

While insisting that prevention remains a key pillar in the fight against cancer, the Health Commissioner urged residents of the state to adopt healthy lifestyles and to prioritise regular medical check-ups.

She said: “Prevention is a key pillar in the fight against cancer. Avoiding tobacco use, limiting alcohol consumption, maintaining a healthy diet, engaging in regular physical activity and seeking protection against cancer-related infections can significantly lower cancer risk.

“I urge all residents of Rivers State to adopt healthy lifestyles and to prioritize regular medical check-ups. Early detection saves lives. Cancers such as breast, cervical. Prostrate, and colorectal cancer have better outcomes when diagnosed early.

“We therefore encourage our people to utilize available screening services and to overcome fear, stigma and misinformation surrounding cancer.”
