2027 Elections: Group Urges National Action To Tackle Gender Apartheid

The Executive Director of Sustainable Initiative for Nurturing Growth (SING), Mercy Ehi Ebute, has said that collective action was needed to end gender apartheid in Nigeria.

Ebute, in a statement, said gender apartheid is a stark reality in Nigerian politics, where women are systematically marginalised and excluded from decision-making spaces.

“Women’s voices, perspectives, and experiences are being silenced, resulting in policies that often neglect their needs and concerns.Women are underrepresented in politics, making up a mere fraction of elected officers. This exclusion perpetuates inequality, fuels poverty, and undermines development. The 2027 elections offer a chance to challenge this status quo.

“As the 2027 National elections approach, the implications of this exclusion are dire and far reaching. Without women’s participation, Nigeria risks perpetuating policies that exacerbate poverty, inequality, and insecurity. Women’s unique perspectives are essential for addressing issues like education, healthcare, and economic empowerment. By excluding women, we compromise the quality of governance and Nigeria’s future,” she said.

Ebute maintained that to eradicate gender apartheid, collective action was needed. “Our non-governmental organisation,Sustainable Initiative for Nurturing Growth (SING), advocates for inclusive electoral processes, equal access to resources, and cultural shifts that value women’s leadership. We urge political parties to adopt gender-sensitive policies, support female candidates, and ensure women’s safety in politics.

“Citizens, too, have a big role to play. It’s imperative that we challenge biases, amplify women’s voices, and demand accountability from leaders. Media outlets can promote balanced reporting, highlighting women’s contributions to politics. By working together, we can minimise gender apartheid’s impact and create a more inclusive democracy.”

She said that with collective action, the 2027 elections will be a turning point. “Let’s seize this opportunity to shatter glass ceilings, challenge patriarchal norms, and build a Nigeria where women’s rights are respected. Join SING in this fight for inclusive governance and equality. Together, we can create a brighter future for all Nigerians.”
